Mr. Jay Miller
Toolbox Teacher, Benjamin Franklin Academy
Jay Miller brings over three decades of experience as both an educator and craftsman to his role as Toolbox Instructor at Benjamin Franklin Academy. With a background rooted in woodworking, boatbuilding, home construction, and outdoor leadership, Jay creates hands-on learning experiences that inspire students to build skills, confidence, and creativity.
Jay has worked extensively in the trades, specializing in residential construction, cabinetry, remodeling, and boatbuilding. He takes pride in blending practical craftsmanship with educational mentorship, encouraging students to see the connections between problem-solving, perseverance, and creativity.
Jay also taught for many years in the University of New Hampshire’s Outdoor Education program, instructing courses in leadership development, wilderness travel, climbing, and mountaineering. He has also designed and led youth leadership programs and overseen ropes course operations.
Outside the classroom, Jay and his family are passionate about adventure sports. They have traveled across the country twice, camping and exploring trails by foot and mountain biking throughout the West. At home in New Hampshire, they enjoy homesteading—raising chickens, pigs, and rabbits—along with rock climbing, skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and “messing about in boats.”
Jay holds a B.S. in Outdoor Education from the University of New Hampshire and trained at the Landing School of Boatbuilding and Design.
